Elwood C. Schmidt, a life long area resident, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at Nyack Manor Nursing Home in Valley Cottage, NY. Son of the late, William and Anna May Ryder Schmidt, he was born January 2, 1923 in Monroe, NY. Elwood was the widower of Sophia Orloff and Virginia Slamen.

Elwood was a retired storekeeper with Orange & Rockland Utilities in Blooming Grove, NY. He was a member of Bonaire Seniors, Suffern, NY and a parishioner of New Hope Church in Monsey, NY. Elwood was a veteran of the US Army serving during World War II.

Survivors include his son Douglas W. Schmidt and his wife Barbara of Tomkins Cove, NY, daughters, Shelley D. Racine of Pittsburgh, PA and Deanna G. Johnson and her husband Glen of Boston, NY, six grandchildren, nieces and nephew. Elwood was predeceased by his brothers William and Richard Schmidt and one grandchild, Sean Racine.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9 PM, Friday, July 16, 2010 at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home, 117 Maple Avenue, Monroe. A Funeral Service will be held in the funeral home at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 17, 2010 with the Rev. Baron Ashfield officiating. Interment will follow in Cemetery of The Highlands, Highland Mills, NY.
