Joseph Kohn, lovingly known as "Pop Pop" passed away Saturday, February 23, 2013 with his family by his side. He was 88. He was predeceased by his loving wife Anita Helene.
He was born on December 13, 1924, in New Brunswick, NJ and raised in Metuchen, NJ. In high school the popular Joe Kohn played baseball and was the captain of his football team. Joe was a combat veteran who served in the Pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. His duties took him from Guadalcanal, through the entire Okinawa Campaign and culminating in China where he was discharged in 1946.
Joe graduated Rider College in 1949. He went on to receive his doctorate in education. He was the Principal of the Ella G. Clarke School in Lakewood, NJ from 1966-1989. He was Lakewood's Man of the Year in 1976, and served terms as President of Lakewood's Temple Beth Am and the local Kiwanis Club.
Joseph and his wife retired and moved to Lake Worth, FL in 1989 where he continued to substitute teach until the age of 80.
Joseph has touched the lives of all that knew him. Among those that will miss him are his loving daughter, Hillary Kiel and her husband, Steve of Goshen, and his son Stuart Kohn of Milburn, NJ. Joseph will also be missed by his grandchildren: Caryn, Kacie, Ross, Jacob, Max and Jesse. Joseph also was a loving uncle and will be missed by his nieces and their families.
The family wishes to thank all those at Park Manor in Middletown who helped care for Joe.
Graveside funeral services will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Route 9W, Middle Hope, NY at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, February 26th. Rabbi Garry A. Loeb will officiate. Shiva will be observed at the home of Hillary and Steve Kiel on Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 6-9.
