Helen I. Smith, a longtime resident of the Monroe area, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her husband and family on March 18, 2018. She was 85. The daughter of the late Stephen Nagy, and Margaret Jackson Nagy, she was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 8, 1932.

At five years of age, Helen went to Scotland to live with her aunt, during school time, and stayed with her grandmother for the rest of the year. She had the companionship of an aunt who was one year older. They attempted to climb the beautiful Scottish Hills behind the grandparents' home. As the time was getting closer to 1939 and the Second World War, the family decided to send Helen home to the U.S.A., along with the Scottish brogue she had acquired.

After graduation from Monroe High School, Helen worked for British Overseas Airways as a Communications Specialist in New York City. She was very active in her church, and served on the Vestry of St. David's Episcopal Church in Highland Mills for many years. She was a loving mother to her four children and enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Walter H. Smith. Surviving are her four children: Jeffrey Smith and wife Carol of Modena, NY, Gail Jackson and husband Rick of Quakertown, PA, Susan Cozart of Monroe, NY, and Stephanie Hiner and husband Christopher of Monroe, NY; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, David Nagy and her grandson, Shawn Hiner.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21st at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home, 117 Maple Avenue, Monroe, NY 10950. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 22nd in the Monroe Funeral Home. Cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Middle Hope, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for memorial contributions to The Alzheimer's Association, 2 Jefferson Plaza, Suite 103, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601-4060.
