Obituary of Burton Hunter

Burton Patterson Hunter

April 8, 1942 – February 7, 2017

Pine Bush, NY formerly of Monroe, NY

Burton P. Hunter was raised on a dairy farm in Oxford Depot, NY by his parents, Harriet P. Hunter and Robert J. Hunter and enjoyed life "on the farm" with his four brothers, Robert, Stephen, Andrew and Thomas. Tractors, cows and a 90 foot fruit and vegetable garden tended to by his maternal grandfather, Silas B. Patterson, were the foundations of his life.

Burt was a graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School, Class of 1960, business graduate of Orange County Community College, and a member of the National Guard. He enjoyed a 43-year career as an owner/operator of an excavation company working throughout Orange County. Burt met and married Patricia Downey Hunter in Washingtonville, and on July 30, 2016 they celebrated 50 years of marriage. They cherished life in Monroe on Stage Road for 45 years in a home designed and built by Burt's grandfather, where they raised two children, Harriet P. Hunter and Burton P. Hunter, Jr. More recently, they bought a property and a home in Pine Bush where they spent time gardening in a farm community setting.

Burt, a proud member of the Bull Family, enjoyed working with his hands, the outdoors, and nature. He was passionate about engines, machinery, his '32 Ford hot rod, his '63 Corvette, his 914 Porsche racecar, Porsche Club events at Watkins Glen, and NASCAR Sprint Cup. Driving a lap around the track at Watkins Glen, Burt was fast, smooth, precise and brought a smile to his face. He also treasured his monthly dinners with the Orange County Contractors. In years past, he snowmobiled and skied. No matter the season or the weather, Burt and Pat walked the beaches of Long Beach Island, New Jersey, Vero Beach, Florida and Hapuna Beach, the Big Island, Hawaii. Many family vacations were spent on Long Beach Island; the August 2016 LBI vacation included over seventy family members.

Burt served his community as a member of the Park Commission and Cemetery Board in the Village of Monroe. He was a 30-year member of the Northern New Jersey Porsche Club.

Over the past 11 months while fighting brain cancer, Burt embodied strength, grace, courage and the stoic resilience of a man with his two feet planted solidly on the earth. Burt and Pat truly cherished his last Christmas vacation with his children, their partners, grandchildren, Evan, Ava and Ivy, and the extended family.

His family owe gratitude to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital, St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, and Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc. The family particularly thank Burt's physician, Dr. Nicholas Bambino; Burt's oncologist, Dr. Jacqueline Stone; medical researcher, Dr. Andrew Protter; Social Worker, Melissa; Chaplain, Ann; and the many doctors and staff members who provided exceptional, professional, and personal care for Burt.

Donations may be made to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center online at mskcc.org/Donate/Fight-Cancer or at P.O. Box 5028, Hagerstown, MD 21741.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the Blooming Grove United Church of Christ, 2 Old Dominion Road, Blooming Grove, NY.
