Obituary of Eugene Banta

Eugene M. Banta, 87, formerly of Waldwick NJ, passed away quietly on April 1, 2017, after a short illness.

He is survived by his children, Carla Karcher and her husband Michael of Johnstown PA, Eugene Banta and his wife Janice of Fair Lawn NJ, Suzanne Cottrell and her husband Paul of Central Valley NY, Marion Banta of Ridgewood NJ, Lisa DiMaggio and her husband John of Central Valley NY and Chrystal Lozano of Montgomery NY. His youngest child, Will, passed away in June of 2015. His wife, Marion, passed away in April of 2012. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He graduated Mount Herman School in 1947 and Lafayette College in 1951, where he was in the ROTC. Upon graduating college, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and lead a Rifle Platoon in combat in Korea until he was severely wounded. After recovering, he was reassigned and ran the Officer's mess for his division.

Upon his return from Korea he married Marion Cella and went to New York Law School. They bought a house in Waldwick, NJ, where all of his children grew up and where his grandchildren fondly remember Sunday night and Holiday dinners. They would often walk down to the HCA park on Sunday afternoons and play until dinnertime which, on occasion, was a little late.

He was active in the Waldwick Baseball Association for many years and served in various capacities, such as Coach, Vice President and President. His law practice was primarily based in New York City, where he practiced until his retirement.

His sage advice often in the form of a long lecture was well known by his children and grandchildren and will be affectionately remembered by them.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4th at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home, 515 Route 32, Highland Mills, NY. A Chapel Service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Cemetery of The Highlands, Highland Mills, NY.
