John J. Casserly passed away Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Woodland Hills Nursing Home in Weirton, WV. He was 81 years old. Son of the late John and Delia Finn Casserly, he was born on July 17, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY. He was a Lieutenant for FDNY Ladder 102 in Brooklyn, NY. John served in the United States Air Force and was a graduate of John Jay College in New York City.
A family statement reads, "John was an avid sportsman, runner and coach of many young Crusaders. He loved his Brooklyn Dodgers that translated into his love of his Mets - a love that has passed through the Casserly generations.
Dad was a hard charging protector of those in need: as a firefighter, volunteer for those mentally and physically challenged, the unborn, and his loved ones. His toughness - his trademark, his will - unyielding, his legacy - his grandchildren, his soul - lifted up to heaven. By his stripes we are healed - I finally get it all now Pop. Love you."
Survivors include his son Matthew Casserly of Monroe, NY; his daughter: Christine Casserly of Miami, FL; his brother: Bernard Casserly of New City, NY, his sisters: Catherine Powers of Port Jefferson, NY, Josie McLaughlin of Port Jefferson, NY; and six grandchildren: Brett, Sean, Jordyn, Ryan, Shane and Dillon. He is predeceased by his son Vincent Casserly and sisters Delia Trainor and Gertrude Casserly.
Memorial Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 6th at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home, 117 Maple Avenue Monroe, NY 10950. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 8th at Infant Jesus Chapel in Port Jefferson, NY. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 10th in Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Goshen, NY.
