Obituary of John Palmer

John J. Palmer, Sr.

November 25, 1946-April 25, 2018

Washingtonville, NY

John J. Palmer, Sr. passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Orange Regional Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill, NY after an 8 year battle with cancer.  He was 71 years old.  Son of the late John M. Palmer and Mary Stout Palmer, he was born November 25, 1946 in Monsey, NY.  John was the owner of Orange County Party Rentals of Middletown, NY.

John came from humble beginnings. As a teenager he lifeguarded at Round Lake in Monroe, NY where he met his wife of 53 years. He was also a milkman and finally a successful business owner.

John was a man who did things to the extreme with an all or nothing type mindset. He along with his wife Daria, sons John Jr, and Christopher took their love of Christmas and opened their Washingtonville home for anyone to tour during the holidays. It became known as “The Christmas House” with themed rooms, decorated trees, figures and ceramic villages as well as a dazzling light up outdoor display bringing joy to thousands. After the passing of their son Christopher in 1998 they renamed the house “Christopher’s Christmas Dream” in his honor using their grief to raise funds and awareness, giving all donations to the American cancer society, the American heart association, and local law enforcement agencies in Christopher’s name.

John along with his sons and dedicated staff created Orange County Party rentals. This family business was his dream and he cared for and was extremely thankful to the many employees years over that allowed it to grow and be a success. In that time they have donated to countless charities and community organizations.

John will always be remembered as someone who treated everyone he met evenly and fairly, as well as for his charitable generosity and penchant for helping out the “underdog”. He saw potential in people often overlooking bad choices in favor of second chances.

Survivors include his loving wife, Daria E. Doyle Palmer, at home; his son John J. Palmer, Jr. and his wife Kristin of Chester, NY; his loving sister Diane Seeley of Middletown, NY and family, sister in law Tara Faber and husband John and family of Monroe, NY, brother in law Daniel Doyle and wife Cathy and family of Goshen, NY, and his three adored grandchildren: Kasey, Kayla and Karly.  John was predeceased by his amazing “larger than life” son Christopher D. Palmer.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff as well as palliative care and hospice teams at ORMC for their kindness and tender care for John during this difficult fight. They gave immeasurable comfort in their above and beyond care, visits, and stories shared making it feel like a home away from home. A special thank you to Joyce Cuevas for her nursing care while he was at home.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 30th at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home, 117 Maple Avenue, Monroe, NY 10950.  A Chapel Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1st in the Funeral Home officiated by Deacon Michael Brescia.  Interment will follow in Cemetery of The Highlands, Highland Mills, NY.

Memorial donations may be made to Pine Bush Relay 4 Life. http://go.relay.org/7csdf
