Obituary of Sara Shuit Dodd
Sara "Sis" Dodd, a lifelong resident of Monroe died unexpectedly at Orange Regional Medical Center on Friday, July 6, 2018. She was born in Highland Mills on October 31, 1914 to the late Barlow F. and Sarah Cromwell Shuit. She was the widow of Edgar M. Dodd. At 15, she enrolled in the School of Music at Ithaca College where she was only able to study for a year due to the Great Depression. For many years, Sara was a legal secretary for lawyers in Monroe and for State Supreme Court Justice Edward M. O'Gorman in Goshen. She enjoyed teaching piano to local children.
She was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe, and served as choir director, assistant organist, financial secretary, Sunday School teacher, and youth director. She served as a clerk of Session, as an officer of the Presbyterian Women and as a tireless volunteer at The Cottage thrift shop. She was a board member, long-time volunteer and secretary for the Boards of Trustees of Monroe Free Library, where she was an expert at covering new books with plastic – a task that no one seemed to want! She was the mother of twin daughters, Sally Mergenhagen (Don) and Marcy Berchtold (Cliff). "A life well-lived doesn't end any more than music ends-it echoes through time with whispers of beauty and grace. If we listen, we can hear the encore with our hearts, for the song plays on , just as love lives on."
