Obituary of Dorothea J. Poponaik

Dorothea "Dot" Jean Poponaik, of Washingtonville, New York passed away on June 18, 2021, in her home at Westminster Village Assisted Living in Dover, DE. She was 92 years old. Dot was born in the small town of Oxford Depot on December 25, 1928, to William N. Simpson and Elsie Decker. Dot was the youngest of four children. She lived almost her entire life in New York. She is preceded in death by her husband and love, Milton Poponaik and her daughter, Sandra J. Astifan. She is survived by her three grandchildren, Brian Astifan (wife Robin), Melissa Buchanan (husband Ryan), Rebecca Persing (husband Phil), her son-in law William Astifan, and her 9 great grandchildren: Ethan, Isaac, Madeline, Cate, Gabriel, Jackson, Hayden, Clark, and Timothy. Dot loved gardening, sewing, and a good New York Cheesecake. She took pride in the many plants that she had in and around her home and creating cross stitches and clothing for family and friends. Dot worked a variety of jobs including welding and embroidery but took the most pride in her role as mother and grandmother. She was a caring, loving, and devoted woman who always put her family first. As a Christian, she often spoke of the day that she would be reunited with her husband and daughter in heaven. Although her friends and family will miss her tremendously, she is at peace and happy to be joined with them again. A Graveside Service will be held for the family on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at Seamanville Cemetery.
